Injectable Hydrogel Helps Hearts Heal

Injectable Hydrogel Helps Hearts Heal
Aug-28-16
An injectable hydrogel able to reinforce weakened area of the heart could help hearts recover from damage while also preventing future attacks.

Created by a team from the University of Pennsylvania, the hydrogel is based on the sugar molecule hyaluronic acid, which is liquid at room temperature. In order to give the gel more structure, the team adjusted its makeup to allow the gel to create internal polymer chain connections, so that it will form a jelly-like consistency. The new hydrogel differs from others currently being developed in that it can be injected directly into the myocardium, where it will attract new cells to build tissue to help shore up damaged areas of the heart wall.
