A new technology that enables regular inkjet printers to print rainbow holograms could make it easier to create anti-counterfeiting security holograms.
Typically, making a security hologram involves first designing a “master” hologram template that can take days to create. In contrast, the new system developed by the team from Russia’s ITMO University uses a new, nanocrystalline ink that can be applied to a microembossed surface (such as paper) with a standard inkjet printer. The ink is then covered with varnish, resulting in a highly refractive, holographic image that can be seen in all visible light.
