Insect Cyborgs Generate Their Own Power

Insect Cyborgs Generate Their Own Power
Nov-25-11
Researchers are developing a way to harvest energy from insects to create 'insect cyborgs', which could be used to deliver sensors to dangerous environments.

Engineers at the University of Michigan College of Engineering were able to harvest the kinetic energy from the insect's wings with a specially designed a spiral piezoelectric generator. The power generated would be used to extend the battery life of a tiny microphone, camera, or gas sensor implanted on the insect.

The next task will be to control the movements of the insects.
