An automated 3D scanner able to image display insects offers a longer lasting alternative to actual specimens.
While insect specimens are useful for scientific reference, the pinned insects can decay—or be eaten—over time. To offer a more stable example for study, teams from the Technische Universität Darmstadt and Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences created the open-source DISC3D (Darmstadt Insect Scanner 3D).
The prototype device illuminates the insect sample from all sides while a motorized sled and stepper motors move and rotate the insect and a digital camera captures images from 400 different spatial directions. The images are combined to create a high-resolution 3D model of the insect that can be viewed on a computer, printed via a 3D-printer, and accessed by other scientists online.
