Intelligent Bikes Warns Riders of Danger

Intelligent Bikes Warns Riders of Danger
Dec-17-14
Designed with elderly cyclists in mind, researchers in the Netherlands have developed an intelligent bicycle that warns the rider of danger.

The prototype electric bike, developed for the government by the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research, is equipped a forward-facing radar and rear camera that link to an onboard computer. When the system detects an approaching cyclist or objects, it will trigger the bike's seat to vibrate, sending a subtle alert to the rider. The bike also has a cradle able to hold a computer tablet that will wirelessly communicate with the bike's sensors and flash a warning if an obstacle is approaching.

According to Maurice Kwakkernaat, a research scientist involved with the project: "Accidents often happen when cyclists look behind them or get a fright when they are passed at high speed."
