Jaguar's Smart Wiper System Triggered by a Glance

Jaguar's Smart Wiper System Triggered by a Glance

Car manufacturer Jaguar has patented a windshield wiper system that saves energy by triggering the rear wiper based on where the driver is looking.

According to the system developers, most intermittent sweeps of rear wipers can be mistimed, so that the windshield is obscured when the driver glances in the mirror for a view behind. And while setting the wiping mode to constant can solve that problem, it also puts extra wear on the components.

To help reduce that wear, the team from Jaguar Land Rover took advantage of their newly developed "Driver Monitor System" (DMS), which can track the driver’s eye movements even when they are wearing sunglasses. In this case, they used the eye-tracking technology to monitor the driver’s gaze. When the rear wipers are set to intermittent, the system will monitor the driver’s gaze and trigger the wipers to give an extra wipe when the driver glances in the rear view mirror.
