Jumping Spider Inspires Compact Depth Sensor

Jumping Spider Inspires Compact Depth Sensor
Oct-31-19
A compact, metalens depth sensor inspired by the jumping spider could have applications in microrobotics and wearable devices.

Developed by a team from MIT, the depth sensor offers an alternative to bulky devices that require batteries and powerful processing speeds. Inspired by the way the jumping spider can measure depth, the metalens will form a pair of differently-defocused images side-by-side on a photosensor, where they are then analyzed by a specialized algorithm to create a depth map.

The team believes the compact sensor could find its way into a range of applications, including tiny robots, smartwatches and augmented reality headsets.
