The KOR-FX haptic vest gets wearers into the gaming action by letting them 'feel' the impact of a gunshot or explosion.
Inspired by a group of noisy college students playing video games, Iranian-American physicist Shahriar Afshar created a company called Immerz five years ago to develop the vest. A great deal of energy went into designing the vest to be comfortable for a range of motions and body types, and this latest version can also function wirelessly.
The KOR-FX vest features acousto-haptic technology, which uses audio and specialized transducers to create localized haptic output. These audio waves are re-interpreted by an algorithm to suit the scene in the game and then transferred into the chest cavity, which vibrates in response and creates the sensation of 'being in the environment.' The vest can be fine-tuned to control the source and distance of the sounds—how much the user can 'feel'—and it can work with music and movies just as well as with games.
