Kyocera Smartphone Soaks Solar Energy Through its Screen

Kyocera Smartphone Soaks Solar Energy Through its Screen
Mar-06-15
The solar-powered concept phone from Kyocera is equipped with a photovoltaic layer built into the screen that can harness the energy from the sun to keep itself charged.

Unlike other commercial solar-powered devices that harness the sun's rays via body-mounted solar cells, the Kyocera phone features a photovoltaic layer developed by Sunpartner called the Wysips Crystal. This layer can fit directly above or beneath the touchscreen, and connects to a chip that controls and directs the harnessed energy.

According to the company, the Wysips can deliver up to 5 milliWatt-peak/cm2, though they are working to double that amount, and will not interfere with the screen's touch capabilities.
