Lasers Bend Glass Around Corners

Lasers Bend Glass Around Corners
Oct-05-19
Researchers have developed a new laser-based technique that allows glass to bend at right angles to produce corners.

Although glass can be bent, the process tends to cause deformities if the angle is too extreme. The technique, from a team at Fraunhofer, relies on first heating the glass to a temperature just below the ‘transition’ point—when the glass becomes malleable. A laser is then used to heat the glass in a straight line along the desired fold, causing the glass to naturally bend at that point when the supports are removed. The team is now investigating commercializing the technology.
