An artificial nervous system for robots could enable them to “feel” pain, and protect themselves from damage.
In development by a team from Leibniz University, the system was spurred by the growing use of robots in areas where people are also working. Although safeguards are also already in place to keep robots from injuring humans, not much attention has been paid to enabling the robots to also protect themselves. The new system, inspired by the human pain-reflex movements,” allows the robot to sense force or temperature, and then remove itself from the potentially damaging situation.
