The leukometer device lets chemotherapy patients monitor their white blood cell count from home, reducing trips to the clinic while also improving treatments.
The smartphone-sized device is equipped with an array of LEDs that project light through the skin, where it is absorbed by hemoglobin but not the white blood cells. This causes the white blood cells to appear transparent, allowing the device to calculate the white blood cells’ concentration using a set of algorithms.
According to Carlos Castro, biomedical engineer at MIT team member, besides allowing for in-home monitoring, the leukometer could also perform continuous measurements, opening the door to new types of treatments.
