Lighter, Greener Reinforced Concrete

Lighter, Greener Reinforced Concrete
Nov-14-19
A next-generation concrete strengthened with stiff polyethylene fibers is both greener and lighter than current versions.

The new concrete mixture developed by team at EPFL replaces the typical steel fibers used to reinforce the material with stiff polyethylene fibers, which provide the same level of support while also adhering very well to the cement mixture. This characteristic allows half of the cement powder to be replaced with limestone—saving resources—and also results in a concrete ten percent lighter with a manufacturing process that releases up to 70 percent less CO2 than standard methods.
