Lightie Brings Light to Developing Nations

Lightie Brings Light to Developing Nations
Mar-10-14
Created to help bring some light to people in developing nations, the Lightie solar-powered light will fit inside a common soda bottle to provide a source of safe and low-cost illumination.

Designed by Michael Suttner, the Lightie will fit into the neck of the soda bottle, where is it screwed in to fit securely, like a lid. Five to eight hours of exposure to sunlight will provide the device with enough power to shine for up to three hours at 300 lumens or up to eight hours at 120 lumens. The Lightie will activate automatically when darkness falls, and it can also be used without the bottle by clipping ti onto clothing or hanging it like a lantern.

Although several solar powered lights designed for developing nations are already available, Suttner has chosen to increase the availability of the Lightie by pairing with Coca Cola, which could help get the device into the hands of more people. At a price of about US$13, the Lightie costs the same as an average South African family’s 6-week kerosene bill.

I'm willing to distribute this in our countryside since this is very interesting & a great help especially in our place where blackouts is already a part of our life, not to mention that there are houses still without electricity connections.
