The LineRanger drone scurries along power lines to inspect miles of lines on just one battery charge.
Although airborne line-inspecting drones have their place, they can demand more power as well as controller nuance as they complete their flight. To offer a simpler alternative, researchers from Canada’s Hydro-Quebec public utility company created the high wire-walking LineRanger robot. After the bot is hoisted onto the transmission line, it will grip it with its battery-powered rollers and travel the line under the control of a ground-based operator, transmitting data in real-time from its array of cameras and sensors.
