Liquid-Based Filter Resists Fouling

Liquid-Based Filter Resists Fouling
Nov-15-18
A liquid-based filtration system inspired by nature could improve wastewater purification while also saving energy.

Typical filtration systems will become less efficient over time, as the particles being blocked build up on the filter membrane, which then needs to be replaced.

As an alternative, the new filter relies on the liquid-gated membranes (LGMs) created by the team at Wyss University. Covered with a liquid that will function as a reversible gate, the LGM will seal its pores in the ‘closed’ state, but can be opened by the application of pressure to allow specific liquids or gases to pass through. The fluid-lined pores of the membrane resist fouling, and can also allow target compounds to be separated from a mixture of substances—common in industrial liquid processing.
