Living Concrete Absorbs Toxins as it Self-Heals

Living Concrete Absorbs Toxins as it Self-Heals
Jan-18-20
An innovative living concrete powered by bacteria can regenerate on-site and even absorb toxins from the air.

The concrete developed by the team from the University of Colorado is made using cyanobacteria, which can grow into very large colonies. The bacteria were placed in brick-shaped molds holding a mixture of a hydrogel and sand, where they reproduced while also absorbing carbon dioxide from its surroundings. As the bacteria grew, the also produced calcium carbonate that caused the hydrogel to solidify and bind the sand particles into bricks. The bacteria bricks can even be cut in half and placed in the hydrogel/sand mixture, where the bacteria will spawn a brick, with the process repeated up three times.
