LudasScope Turns Microbes into a Game

LudasScope Turns Microbes into a Game
Oct-17-16
The LudusScope aims to encourage more students to study microbiology by letting kids play games with real eukaryotes.

Developed by a team of Stanford University microbiologists, the LudasScope system is made up of a set of lenses and a 3D-printed platform that supports a smartphone. A slide holding light-sensitive, freely moving Euglena eukaryotes is positioned beneath the smartphone’s camera, and the game’s software app overlays different game screens on top of the slide image. The player controls the eukaryotes by illuminating the four LEDs in the platform’s corners, guiding the microbes through different paths and challenges.
