The LumiWatch invention extends the capabilities of a smartwatch by projecting a touchscreen onto the skin.
Developed by the team from Carnegie Mellon, the LumiWatch is equipped with a laser projector able to shine a fifteen-lumen display onto the wearer’s arm. The watch’s depth-sensing array offers continuous finger tracking, resulting in an interactive touch area of about 40 square centimeters. The display is bright enough to be seen in daylight, and the system has a battery life of about one day.
According to head of FIG, Chris Harrison, “Smartwatches have yet to gain traction in large part because the interfaces are so meager you can’t do much with them. If we can solve that problem – give smartwatches big screens – we might be able to make them first class devices.”
