Magnetic nerves could help vehicles sense damage and determine if repairs are required.
Developed under funding from the US Army, the new technology from Clemson University builds on previous work that would allow robots to sense damage and protect themselves. The damage sensors rely on a magnetostrictive material placed between layers of a composite material to create a laminate. As the magnetostrictive material responds to a magnetic field or changes in stress, sensors detecting the change send an alert to a paired device, determining the level of damage and whether or not the vehicle should be brought in for repairs.
