Making Medicines from Yeast

Making Medicines from Yeast
Jul-30-16
A portable machine able to produce medicines from yeast could help doctors save lives in remote areas.

The machine, created by a team from MIT, relies on the programmable Pichia pastoris yeast strain, which can be triggered to express different therapeutic proteins. The yeast are contained within a microbioreactor, where they are fed a liquid chemical trigger to produce the protein. The liquid can be removed to create a different protein while still leaving the protein-producing cells behind, allowing the clinician to produce medicines on demand.
