Micro-Drones Ride the Winds of Storms

Micro-Drones Ride the Winds of Storms
Jun-09-13
A new breed of unmanned, storm chasing drones able to ride on the winds of a hurricane could one day be used to gather important data for researchers who remain safely on the ground.

The drones, in development by Professor Kamran Mohseni of the University of Florida, are about six inches long and the same weight as an iPod Nano. Rather than fight the winds, the tiny drones are designed to ride the currents of wind and water toward their destination. This allows the drones conserve fuel, because they would only use power to move themselves into the best possible current for their target location. Once in position, the multiple onboard sensors would gather data for later study.
