Modified Algae Generates More Biofuel

Modified Algae Generates More Biofuel
Jun-23-17
Genetically modified algae able to create twice as much biofuel marks a significant step forward in bringing the technology to the market.

The algae were created by Synthetic Genomics, Inc. and ExxonMobil using the CRISPR-Cas9 editing technique—among others. The new algae have an oil content of 40 percent (compared to the original 20 percent), which allows it to produce up to five grams of lipid daily. And most significantly, the modified algae’s growth rate is not diminished—overcoming a problem that had occurred with previously modified versions.
