Made from locally-sourced, recyclable materials, the modular ModRoof offers an alternative to traditional roofing materials while also performing more effectively.
Developed by the Indian startup ReMaterials, the ModRoof is made of materials such as packing waste and coconut fibers. According to ReMaterials CEO Hasit Ganatra, the manufacturing process is simple, and the resulting panels are waterproof as well as insulated, helping to keep the internal temperature cooler in summer. As an added bonus, the roofs are also much quieter in the torrential Indian rains.
The roofs have an estimated lifespan of more than 20 years, and are up to seven times less expensive than conventional roofs. The team also hopes to create a roof panel with an integrated solar cells, which could power devices inside the home.
