The Moss FM is the first plant-powered radio, and is also the first functioning moss-powered object that requires more electricity than an LCD.
The radio was created as an experiment by Fabienne Felder and Dr. Paolo Bombelli, of the University of Cambridge, to explore the emerging biophilic technology—harnessing the electrons and protons of photosynthesizing plants to create an electrical current. The “fuel cell” is made up of a frame of ten connected moss pots, which was able to harness enough power (4.5 volts) to enable the radio to play for one minute and 20 seconds. An LCD screen, which requires less power, was able to run continuously off the moss pot battery.
