The MOST device stores solar energy in a chemical liquid that can be transported and released as heat on demand.
Developed by a team from the Chalmers University of Technology, the MOST (MOlecular Solar Thermal) device is the result of six years of work. The technology involves exposing hydrocarbon norbornadiene to light, which alters the chemical bonds to create quadricyclane. The quadricyclane can be triggered to release the stored heat, when needed.
