Mushroom-Based Batteries Could Replace Graphite

Mushroom-Based Batteries Could Replace Graphite
Oct-01-15
A new lithium-ion battery based on mushrooms could offer an affordable and eco-friendly alternative to synthetic graphite.

Inspired by the extremely porous nature of portabello mushrooms, a team from the University of California, Riverside heated the skin from the mushroom’s cap to more than 2000°F, creating a porous carbon nanoribbon able to store and transfer energy. The mushrooms also contain a great deal of potassium salt, which will make the pores even more accessible to electrolytes and actually increase the battery’s performance over time.
