Nano Scale Mass Spectrometer

Nano Scale Mass Spectrometer

(3)Jul-27-09
Caltech researchers have developed a mass spectrometer capable of measuring individual molecules in real time. Conventional mass spectrometers require specific concentrations of molecules that are much larger in size.

The device uses bridge-like resonators, which are only 2 micrometers long and 100 nanometers wide, that vibrate at a high frequency and effectively serve as the "scale" of the mass spectrometer.

When a protein lands on the resonator, it causes a decrease in the frequency at which the resonator vibrates and the frequency shift is proportional to the mass of the protein. This technique will soon enable mass spectra for complicated mixtures to be built up, molecule-by molecule.
