Nano-tech Fabric Filters Toxins

Nano-tech Fabric Filters Toxins
Dec-08-12
A fabric able to automatically filter out toxins from the air could lead to a new generation of “smart uniforms” for soldiers.

The material, an extremely-breathable membrane with pores of vertically-aligned carbon nanotubes, will respond in the presence of a chemical agent by contracting the pores to block the toxin. The pores would still be large enough to allow for some breathability, and would open again automatically once the threat had passed.

The team is also working on a second method, with the fabric trapping the toxic molecules in its outer layer and then shedding the layer like skin.
