Nanoparticles Help Control Internal Bleeding in the Field

Nanoparticles Help Control Internal Bleeding in the Field
Apr-21-15
Steroid-loaded nanoparticles that can be injected into the body after exposure to an explosive blast could save lives on the battlefield.

Explosions account for 79 percent of deaths on the battlefield. To help reduce that number, Researchers at Virginia Tech and Case Western Reserve University loaded hemostatic dexamethasone nanoparticles (hDNP), which promote blood clot formation, with corticosteroid, an anti-inflammatory. In tests on rats, the compound increased oxygen levels and reduced internal bleeding and cellular damage when injected within ten minutes of the injury.
