Nanopropellers Deliver Drugs to the Eye

Nanopropellers Deliver Drugs to the Eye
Nov-11-18
Tiny robots able to drill through the eye could be used to deliver medication to targeted areas.

Created by the team at the Max Planck Institute, the tiny bots are the first nano-vehicles able to travel through dense tissue (in contrast to biological fluids). Measuring only 500 nm wide—which is smaller than a bacteria—the nanopropellers have been treated with a non-stick coating that allows them to slip through the gel-like, molecular matrix of the vitreous tissue without causing damage. With their ability to safely travel through dense tissue, the nanopropellers offer an exciting new way to deliver medication to targeted areas.
