Navion Chip Ushers in Ultra-Small Drones

Navion Chip Ushers in Ultra-Small Drones
Jun-22-18
The tiny Navion navigation chip could help give rise to drones smaller than a honeybee.

Developed by the team from MIT, the Navion chip was built with an eye towards minimal power consumption—in particular, less than 100 milliwatts. To achieve that goal, the team used a combination of innovative hardware and algorithms to compress images and save memory, bringing power use down to just 24 milliwatts. Despite its small power consumption, the Navion chip can process camera images in real-time at up to 171 frames per second, and can also determine its location in space without the need for GPS.
