Non-Toxic, More-Effective Antifreeze

Non-Toxic, More-Effective Antifreeze
Mar-29-15
A new antifreeze made from a food additive and metal nanoparticles could one day replace the toxic version used by consumers today.

The antifreeze is based on a version already in industrial use, which is made using the non-toxic, food-additive propylene glycol instead of the dangerous ethylene glycol version used in most vehicles. The non-toxic version, however, is too thick to work in consumer vehicles.

In order to increase the applications of the safer antifreeze, a research team from ACTA Technology diluted the mixture with water and added pyrogenic metal oxide nanoparticles. This not only made the liquid thin enough for use in cars, it also resulted in a heat transfer almost double that of ethylene glycol-based antifreezes.
