Open Bionic Prosthetics Turn Kids into Superheroes

Open Bionic Prosthetics Turn Kids into Superheroes
Oct-08-15
Developed with children in mind, the low-cost, superhero-inspired hands from Open Bionics transform a once-embarrassing prosthetic into a cool, personal statement.

The designs by Open Bionics were created in collaboration with Disney, who offered royalty-free access to some of their characters to select startups. During the design process, Open Bionics Joel Gibbard learned that despite the huge jumps in prosthetic technology, people are more concerned about the look and the weight of the hand, rather than its dexterity.

With this new knowledge, Gibbard’s team focused on improving the looks and reducing the weight of the hands—and seeing them more as a fashion accessory. The 3D-printed prosthetics feature different Disney designs, making them more attractive to kids and helping remove their stigma. The devices go beyond looks, though, and also include feedback sensors to help the user monitor their grip.
