Oto HOME Diagnoses Ear Infections from Home

Dec-19-14 The Oto HOME from CellScope lets parents diagnose their child's ear infection at home—with help from a smartphone and a remote doctor.

Currently compatible with the iPHone 5/5s, the Oto HOME looks—and works—much like a conventional otoscope used by doctors to check inside a patient's ear. The kit includes a smartphone case and the otoscope attachment, which sits over the phone's camera and allows the parent to capture an image (or video) of the eardrum. That information can then be sent to an on-call physician who is part of the CellScope program, and a prescription can be called in if necessary—with no trip to the ER or doctor's office required.

Ear infections are incredibly common among children, affecting up to 80 percent of children at one time or another.
