Researchers have developed a paper-based lab able to perform complex, multi-step diagnostics without the need for human intervention.
The paper-based platform was made possible with the team's innovative idea of embedding actuated valves in the layers of the paper itself. These micropumps allow the sample fluid and reagents to be mixed in a controlled manner, creating accurate results that can be read with a smartphone.
According to Professor Mohammad Faghri , the platform technology could be used to detect a wide range of diseases, including HIV and Ebola, and new platforms can be developed around different biomarkers.
