A paper sensor able to monitor sun exposure could help prevent sunburns, and the health risks associated with them.
The sun-sensitive paper was created by applying a food dye and titanium dioxide to a paper substrate. As the paper is exposed to UV light, the titanium dioxide will function as a photocatalyst, which in turn causes the dye to change color. The color change can be easily detected, allowing the individual to monitor their sun exposure. To further individualize the measurements, neutral density fibers can be applied to the paper to account for different skin tones.
