A new paper test able to identify counterfeit medications costs less than a dollar to manufacture.
Created by a team at the University of Notre Dame, the test is equipped with twelve channels each embedded with reagents able to detect individual chemical compounds. To test a sample medication, the team crushed a pill and rubbed the powder across the device’s channels, then submerged the card in water. The water wicks up the device to deliver the dissolved powder to the reagents, which will change color when they make contact with different products. This chemical-based color key can be used to identify counterfeit drugs.
