The paper-thin mille-feuille filter is able to remove viruses from water, offering an affordable source of clean water that could change the lives of millions of people.
Created by a team from Uppsala University, the filter is made of cellulose nanofibers arranged in layers that resemble the French pastry called mille-feuille. This unique arrangement allows the filter to trap dangerous microorganisms—including viruses—without the need for harsh chemicals. And because cellulose is extremely common, the filters can be made for much less than current filters.
