Passive Anti-Frosting Technology

Passive Anti-Frosting Technology
Sep-17-18
A new eco-friendly frost-resisting system relies on strategically placed grooves to siphon moisture from the air to prevent ice buildup.

Developed by a team from Virginia Tech, the chemical-free technology is based on microscopic patterns of elevated grooved etched into the surface of materials. Water will be drawn into the grooves in wet, cold weather, where it will freeze into stripes of ice and pull moisture from the surrounding air, preventing frost from gathering on 90 percent of the surface.
