Phenocart Takes Plants' Vitals Quickly

Phenocart Takes Plants' Vitals Quickly
Jun-29-16
Being compared to a FitBit for plants, the Phenocart offers a quick and efficient way for farmers to gather data on their crops.

Develop by a team from Kansas State University, the Phenocart is able to determine the physical traits of the individual plants (phenotyping) much more quickly than can be done by humans alone. The device—based on a bicycle wheel—is equipped with an array of sensors able to detect traits such as color, leaf temperature and vegetation index as it is rolled down the rows of plants. According to Jesse Poland, assistant professor at KSU, the Phenocart will allow researchers to gather measurements faster and speed the breeding process.
