Planting Trees with Drones

Planting Trees with Drones
Oct-05-15
The startup BioCarbon engineering hopes to counter large, industrial scale deforestation by using drones to plant trees at precisely chosen locations.

The company’s “precision forestry” plan consists of two stages. First, fixed-wing drones will map the land to be re-planted, noting things like nutrients and types of plants in the vicinity. That information is used to create a “precision planting platform,” which directs a multi-rotor drone to the area and triggers it to fire a seed pod at the designated planting location. According BioCarbon’s head of engineering Susan Graham, this “precision forestry” could help to increase the survival rate of the newly planted trees.
