Pocket-Sized Anthrax Detector can be Used in the Field
Apr-20-14
Researchers have created a pocket-sized anthrax detector that could make testing for anthrax both safer and more accessible to developing nations.

The detector requires no batteries or electricity, can tolerate extremes in temperatures, can detect anthrax spores in very small numbers and can be used in the field by a trained technician. After a small sample is placed in the amplification chamber, it is sent through the different testing stages via a system of magnetically operated valves. The results are visible within several hours, with a colored line indicating the presence of the bacteria.

The device could be particularly useful to farmers in rural areas and developing countries, who often cannot afford the more expensive anthrax tests currently available.
