An absorbent polymer made of petroleum by-products could help clean up ocean oil spills.
Developed by an international team of researchers, the polymer is created from sodium chloride, sulfur and used cooking oil. The sulfur and cooking oil repel water, causing the polysulfide polymer to absorb hydrocarbons, and the captured oil can be recovered by squeezing the material—allowing the polymer to be reused.
