Powering EVs Via Their Tires

Powering EVs Via Their Tires
Oct-16-14
By taking advantage of the steel belt usually found in rubber tires, researchers have unveiled a prototype electric vehicle powered by radio frequency transmission.

The technology, which the developers hope will significantly reduce the number of batteries needed to power an EV, works by applying a radio frequency voltage to a metal track that runs under the road. As the car moves along the road, it charges its battery by harnessing the electricity from the excited electrodes beneath it.

Although systems are already in place that allow EV vehicles to be charged via the road infrastructure, the radio transmission technology eliminates the need to actually make contact with the conductivity device.
