Printing Bionic Eyes

Printing Bionic Eyes
Apr-23-15
The biotech startup MHOX hopes to one day allow humans to replace their faulty eyes with synthetic new ones made from a 3D printer.

As part of the the Enhance Your Eye (EYE) concept, the synthetic eyes would be made by a 3D bioprinter, which are already being used to create ears, kidneys and blood vessels. According to MHOX lead designer Filippo Nassetti, recent evolutions in technology could soon allow for the bioprinting of functional body parts that could repair or even augment their natural counterparts.

The EYE concept would see the patient having their natural eyes removed and a 'deck' inserted into the head to act as a permanent connection. This would in turn allow new eyes to be inserted as upgrades become available. Currently, the EYE concept envisions the users choosing between three different types of eyes, with the first—EYE Heal—focused on replacing a damaged eye with one that has standard capabilities. The team believes the EYE technology could be on the market by 2027.
