Programmable Table Packs Flat, Self-Assembles

Programmable Table Packs Flat, Self-Assembles
Apr-25-15
The Programmable Table can transition from a flatpack state to a small table with a simple gesture—opening the door to more examples of portable, functional furniture.

The result of collaboration between the MIT Self-Assembly Lab and the Milan-based Wood-Skin, the prototype table is based upon Wood-Skin’s existing technology. The wood-skin process involves placing a textile between two layers of wood and then cutting the wood into specific, complex patterns. The cuts act as hinges that allow the wood to bend while the textile keeps the structure rigid.

To create Programmable Table prototype, the MIT team developed their own elastic smart material pre-programmed to pop the wooden structure into shape, making the transformation from flat to table automatic.
