Designed for patients with epilepsy, the Prometera II is the first device able to deliver medication directly to the brain.

Developed by Flowonix and Cerebral Therapeutics, the Prometera II infusion device is meant to be implanted in patients with medically refractory epilepsy, where it will deliver valproate (valproate sodium) directly to the brain. The device can be refilled multiple times and has a battery life of about ten years. The Prometera II currently undergoing testing at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.

It is inaccurate to say this is the first device able to delivery medication directly to the brain. Similar implantable programmable infusion devices have delivered medication to the brain (ICV, IPA and IT) for over two decades investigational-use and commercially for several indications. It is a first time for epilepsy however.
