Prototype Trawler Reduces Fish Waste

Prototype Trawler Reduces Fish Waste
Nov-29-16
A prototype trawler system helps reduce waste by using everything except the fishes’ bones.

Developed by the SINTIF research group, the new system separates the bones from the rest of the fish waste via a hydrolysis process. The resulting ‘soup’ is then mixed with enzymes, which enable the extraction of oil and other materials that could be used in human or animal food. The process all happens on board the trawler.

The team hopes the trawler will help to address the rapidly rising need for food, which could increase by as much as 70 percent by 2050.
