A new method of analyzing biopsy samples could help ensure all cancerous tissue has been removed before the patient leaves the operating table—eliminating the need to send a sample to an external laboratory.
Developed by a team from US Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), the technique relies on a previously-created automated droplet-based liquid microjunction surface sampling probe—which eliminates the need to cut and mount tissue samples. Using this probe, tissue samples gathered during surgery are subjected to a liquid chromatography that separates the molecules for identification.
Although other rapid cancer diagnosis technologies are in development, the ORNL version is the first that can identify the larger molecules necessary for a proper diagnosis, and the results can be reviewed by a technician quickly, in the operating room.
